Obtaining a Hair SampleThe hair sample consists of one teaspoonful of hair. It should be taken in small portions from at least three different areas of the occipital region of the scalp. (See picture above) Cut hair as close to the scalp as possible, and do not pull it out. The length of hair used should not exceed 1 1/2 inches. Retain the portion closest to the root (proximal portion) and discard the excess. The proximal portion reflects the most recent metabolic activity.
